Or: How we got where we are today Dec 16, 2003 I have always been one of those strictly anti-war type people. But check this out. I get the feeling that war is almost mandatory for the evolution of human thinking. It feels like without war, there is no real need for great advances in thinking. With only prehistoric levels of knowledge, we can still breathe, reproduce, get water and get food. They are all very simple to do. What we can’t do is survive our fellow humans, for as soon as they invent the spear, we need to invent a bow and arrow that can kill them before they kill us. As sick as this sounds… just take a second to think about it. It seems that warfare is the only reason we are at the level of intelligence that we are at today. Sure there have been some advances not related to war, for example… ‘the lead water pipes are killing people, perhaps we should stop using lead pipes’. But you have to admit, so much else has come about from the need to survive, outwit, and overpower our fellow humans. Would we be on the moon, have chemotherapy, and have the internet if it weren’t for all of the technological advances related to war? I would guess not. |
